The month of May is National Water Safety Month. With summer just around the corner chances are you will be opening your pool in the next few weeks if you haven’t already. It is never too early to begin thinking about pool safety. While no pool is completely safe there are some swimming pool safety systems you will want to explore to prevent the risk of swimming injuries.

Swimming Pool Safety Systems

  • Fences/Gates – The American Red Cross recommends that you completely surround your pool with a 4-foot high fence or barrier with a self-closing or self-latching gate. The area under and through a fence barrier should be no more than 4 inches. This will prevent neighborhood children and pets from wandering into your yard. If you belong to a neighborhood association you will want to check the covenants and get the proper permission and approval for your fencing.
  • Pool and Spa Covers – When the pool is not in use these will prevent individuals or pets from falling into the water. In addition, they cut down on energy costs, can help save you money, and keep unwanted debris out of the pool.
  • Pool Alarms – There are a variety of different pool alarms that can attach to the side of your pool or even be placed under the water to detect when someone or something has gone into the water. There are also alarms that can be installed to go off when doors or gates to the pool are opened.
  • Drain Cover – Make sure you have an anti-entrapment safety drain covers. They will prevent a swimmer or clothing from becoming entangled in a flat drain or crate. Your cover should be federally compliant. Inspect it regularly to make sure it is not broken or missing.
  • Water Filtration System – Whether you have a chlorine or saltwater pool it’s important that your water filtration system is functioning and working correctly so the water remains clear. It is not recommended that you swim in pools where the water is cloudy and you cannot see the bottom.

Even with all the barriers and swimming pool safety systems available, your eyes and ears are the most important way to prevent unwanted pool accidents. It is easy to become distracted when socializing. Individuals should never swim alone and children should be monitored at all times. Make sure anyone in the home who will have access to the pool or spa knows how to swim and has taken lessons
